Here are some of the books I've been reading lately. I love exploring different genres -
from classic literature to modern fiction, philosophical works to horror stories.
These reviews are from my Goodreads account.
The Samurai Detectives (The Samurai Detectives, #1)
by ShÅtarÅ Ikenami
â
â
â
â
â
Not sure what I was expecting but I didn't enjoy it. Daijiro seemed like the central character but there was little to no development of him throughout the first part. The mysteries were okay I guess. And what's about these 19yo girls gushing over the 60yo Kohei!
The Mystery of the Yellow Room (Joseph Rouletabille #1)
by Gaston Leroux
â
â
â
â
â
It's ironic that the book that introduced me to this masterpiece has faded in comparison. Joseph Rouletabille is certainly one of the most likeable protagonists I've encountered in recent reading. He has real depth as a character. Having just finished a Kosuke Kindaichi novel before this, I found myself decidedly preferring Rouletabille's characterization. The plot is greatâimaginative and passionate, hallmarks of Leroux's storytelling. Overall, a pleasant and satisfying read.
The Honjin Murders (Detective Kosuke Kindaichi, #1)

The Vegetarian
by Han Kang
â
â
â
â
â
I DNFed it at around page 30 not because the writing was bad but because I just couldn't endure what was happening. I just don't have that much guts in me.
Of Mice and Men
by John Steinbeck
â
â
â
â
â
I don't know what to write honestly. When I finish a book I often try to put myself in the shoes of one of the characters and try to think about what I would've done in that situation. I wore George's shoes and honestly, I don't know.

Around the World in Eighty Days
by Jules Verne
â
â
â
â
â
Around the World in Eighty Days is just as fun as it was when I read it as a kid. A stellar cast of characters, detailed descriptions of the places being visited, and the breakneck pace of the story make it a certified classic. This translation by William Butcher is undoubtedly one of the best.
Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Other Stories: Annotated Edition (Alma Classics Evergreens)

â
â
â

â
Honestly, I picked up this book jist to read the title story, and as far as that is concerned, a solid 4 out of 5 read. Seems a bit drawn out near the end but very, very well written. Maybe someday I'll read the rest of the stories in the book as well.

Undoubtedly a very well written book. Up until chapter 22, I enjoyed a lot and read fast but from chapter 23, I started to struggle. I wish it didn't drag as long as it did. That's my only complain.
A Gentle Creature and Other Stories: White Nights; A Gentle Creature; The Dream of a Ridiculous Man
by Fyodor Dostoevsky
â
â
â
â
â
Some of the best short stories out there You may have seen White Nights mentioned a lot on BookToks recently. While one of the best short stories out there, it's certainly not Dostoyevsky's best work. It's still a very good story, and I come back to the story of the dreamer time and time again simply because it's written so beautifully. A Gentle Creature is another great story, and I read it long ago in my native language. I've since read it a few different times, and it felt equally good. The Dream of a Ridiculous Man is the story is the one I have the least experience with. Nice story with a beautiful ending.

The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories
by Leo Tolstoy
â
â
â
â
â
This collection of novellas translated by Nicolas Pasternak Slater is a first class reading experience While I can't comment on the accuracy of the translation without knowing Russian, the prose is fluid and engaging, making the book a genuine pleasure from start to finish. There are six stories/novellas in this book and I more or less liked all of them. 1. The Two Old Men - a solid 4/5 story. Profound, it had a good message and I liked the characters. 2. How Much Land Does a Man Need? - a 3/5 story. Short, it was deep but I didn't like the characters that much. 3. The Forged Coupon - another 4/5 story with a lot of surprises. Absolutely loved it. 4. Master and Workman - the weakest of the bunch, a 2/5 story at best. I read up to the fifth chapter, got bored and then skipped it. 5. Alyosha Pot - somewhere between 3.5/5 and 4/5 story. Short, sad but enjoyable. 6. The Death of Ivan Ilyich - the absolute best. Easily a 5/5 story. I could literally what death feels like. My favorite quote from the book - "He wept for his helplessness, and his terrible loneliness, and peopleâs cruelty, and Godâs cruelty, and Godâs absence."
The Phantom of the Opera
by Gaston Leroux
â
â
â
â
â
I loved how despite having many decorous characters around the Phantom held the center stage throughout. I loved how the story is told as reports/memoirs/notes and so on. This is my first Leroux book and I'm looking forward to reading more of him. I read the translation by Mireille Ribière and I enjoyed it very much. Except for a tiny mistranslation in the Epilogue everything was top notch. You can find further information about all the available translations here - https://fdelopera.tumblr.com/phantom-...

DNFed it. This is certainly a great book but just not for me. The story while started out good started to feel drawn out after 200 pages. The characters are not likable at all. Mostly dumb, unintelligent and predictable. The only character that I liked was the librarian and the waitress at that gas station.
